Beautiful and historical Cochise County is located 82 miles southeast of Tucson in Southeastern Arizona. Cochise County’s county seat is Bisibee with a population of 5,996 as of the 2007 census estimate. Cochise County’s population is 129,518 people as of the 2007 census estimate. The following cities, towns and communities are located within Cochise County: Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, Willcox, Huachuca City, Naco, Pirtleville, Sierra Vista Southeast, St. David and Whetstone.
On February 1, 1881, Cochise County was officially created out of the easternmost portion of Pima County, Arizona. Cochise County took its names from the legendary war chief Chiricahua Apache of the Cochise. Formerly, the county seat was Tombstone, but in 1929 it was moved to Bisibee. Today, visitors to Cochise County visit the City of Tombstone to watch re-enactments of the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and experience the authentic Wild West atmosphere of the eclectic City of Bisibee. |
